Lemmas transformed into leafy mini-plants, in place of florets [Group 10a] .

May be all, or a majority or a minority of mini-plants, compared with normal flowers 3 species in our area
or:-

Grasses with separate male and female flowers on the same plant (monoecious)

Male inflorescences terminal, without leaves; female inflorescences axillary and enclosed in a leaf-sheath. Widely cultivated (maize) Zea mays A.

Grasses with separate male and female flowers on different plants (dioecious)

Impressively tall tufted clump ; spikes 2-3 M Rarely escapes from gardens in our area Cortaderia selloana P.

Woody stems. Loose panicle, but flowering rare, and is followed by death of plant.
Several species, rarely escapes in our area. The bamboos (includes other rarer genera)

Genus identified. No key in FlorMed or other local flora, as not naturallised



Group 10a

‘Viviparous’: Lemmas transformed into leafy mini-plants, in place of florets.

Either:-

10-40 cm, sometimes forms low tussocks; stalks swollen as a bulb at the base; very common in our area, normally as the viviparous form

30-100 cm, thick tough base; hairy ligules; viviparous form not common
